Prof. Andrei Krassioukov

Andrei Krassioukov is a Professor and Endowed Chair at the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Department of Medicine, and associate director and a scientist at the International Collaboration on Repair Discovery (ICORD) at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada. He is also a staff physician at the spinal cord injury program at the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver. Prof. Krassioukov is the first Canadian physician elected President (2018-2022) of the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA).

He is a clinician-scientist and practicing physiatrist whose research and clinical work focused on autonomic dysfunctions following spinal cord injury and other neurodegenerative conditions. As a leader in a distinct and specialized field, he has published over 350 manuscripts and built up an H-index of 76 with over 23,401 citations (source Google

Scholar) and ranked as a number 2 researcher during the last five years in the world in the field of SCI (source ScholarGPS).

He is a well-recognized for pioneering translational research for the understanding and improving of dysautonomia after SCI. He has an unwavering commitment to improve SCI clinical care in BC, Canada and around the world and have dedicated his career to investigating the effects of SCI on autonomic and cardiovascular functions. Lately, he is leading the application of electrical stimulation to improve and restore autonomic function in individuals with SCI.

He established strong collaborations with International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and for twenty years conducted research during numerous Paralympic events (Paralympic Games 2010 Vancouver, 2012 London, 2014 Sochi, and 2015 Toronto Pan American Games) in area of autonomic disfunctions among Paralympians. In 2020 IPC named him as a Pioneer of Autonomic Paralympic Research.

Prof. Krassioukov has served on the boards of the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) and is the current past-President of the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA). He received several recognitions for publications in the area of SCI research (ASIA Awards 2003, 2014). In 2010 he was elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Science in recognition of research excellence and leadership, was awarded a 2019 Great Supervisor Award, UBC, the 2020 CAPM&R “Meredith Marks Award for Excellence in Education”, and recipient of the 2020 Can Association of PM&R Visiting Professorship Award to visit Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation, Fredericton, New Brunswick for “Appraise the state of discovery and knowledge on neuromodulation therapies for recovery in SCI”. Dr. Krassioukov’s clinical work and leadership on autonomic cardiovascular dysfunctions following SCI has been leading the development of the International Autonomic Standards and has created awareness for these invisible dysfunctions. Dr. Krassioukov is the Co-Chair of the 2021 Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) on autonomic dysfunctions which are now expanded to address autonomic dysreflexia (AD) occurring during urological procedures, labor and delivery, and self-induced AD (“boosting”). This CPG effectively includes 4 stand-alone CPGs addressing previously unrecognized autonomic dysfunctions i.e. orthostatic hypotension, temperature, and sweating dysregulation (title: Autonomic Dysreflexia and Other Autonomic Dysfunctions: Preventing the Highs and Lows. Management of Blood Pressure, Sweating, and Temperature Dysfunction).
